Lewis pulled the warped door of the disused greenhouse; the latch slid open, yielding with a muted click. Inside, rows of dusty benches framed a narrow aisle, and cracked panes let the afternoon wind weave through the space. Loose wires suspended small glass tubes that once served as wind-harps, and he raised a recorder, intent on catching their accidental melody. The greenhouse had been a fascination for traveling botanists decades earlier, yet only ivy remained to applaud the breeze.

A higher note fluttered, then vanished. Lewis spotted a slack string near the rafters and climbed a wooden crate to tighten it. The crate rocked. A porcelain pot balanced on the shelf above trembled. He steadied the object with one hand, but creeping bindweed clung to the base, eager to complicate his careful grip. He tugged twice; the vine refused. On the third pull it snapped, and the sudden release tipped the pot sideways.

The pot struck the shelf edge, fractured, and scattered pale shards across the tiles. From the wreckage rolled a tiny brass key, its surface dulled but unbent. The key skidded until a metal toolbox blocked its path. Startled by the unexpected cargo, Lewis crouched and lifted the box. Its lid squeaked open to reveal a wooden cube no larger than an apple. He wound the key into a slot on one side, unsure whether the mechanism would still turn.

Gears clicked, and a clear tune spilled into the room, folding itself around the trembling glass tubes above. Wind gusted again; the tubes chimed in irregular harmony with the refurbished box. Sound bounced off the cracked glass, mixed, and softened, as if the entire structure breathed in time with the rotating cylinder. When the spring finally ran down, silence glided back between the benches. Shards of pale porcelain rested among trailing leaves.
