She rocked it once, twice, then leaned her shoulder until the thin walnut veneer cracked with a dry pop. Light from a ceiling spot hit the freshly exposed surface, turning the grain a soft amber. She exhaled through pursed lips and angled the panel against a bench.

She lowered the tote, but a rolling cart clipped her heel and rattled, sending the fox racing again. A second pass brought it against a closed door; with a quick scoot, she dropped the tote over the small body and slid her hand beneath, forming a gentle cradle.

The fox calmed once darkness covered its sight, body light as feathers against her palms. She eased it into an empty terrarium meant for static models and wedged the lid. Footsteps echoed; a security guard peered around the corner, eyes narrowing at the unexpected guest. Rosalie tapped the visitor log on the terrarium’s frame and lifted her shoulders in a brief shrug. Somewhere above, the radio cut to silence and ventilation blades took over the room’s rhythm. Above her table, the ventilation fan hummed while the crate lid rested at an awkward angle.
