English Original
Warm afternoon air drifted through the empty riverside market; canvas roofs flapped against metal frames while scattered sawdust scratched across the planks. Lara rolled a compact generator out from beneath her stall. She had planned to power a chain of colored bulbs so the booth could be found after dusk. A wooden table sat on a slight fifteen-degree tilt, and every marble she used for decoration kept sliding toward the edge. After a moment of deliberation, she wedged a folded brochure under one leg, then knelt beside the machine and twisted the fuel cap.
The cap resisted, creaking once, then locking halfway. She wiped her sleeve across the thread, tried again, and a thin click released the seal. The starter cord had been replaced recently, yet the first pull slipped from her grip. If the cord had broken again, the entire plan would have vanished. Instead of hurrying, she counted three breaths, angled her foot against the frame, and drew the rope in one steady motion. The engine coughed, fell silent, then restarted with impeccable timing just as a gust swept along the riverbank and rattled every empty can nearby.
Bulbs blinked awake, casting rings of blue, green, and amber against the water. Lara stepped back to admire the impeccable glow, but the surprise came from above: reflections bounced under the bridge and confused a flock of swallows. Birds looped through the beams, dropped toward the lights, and skimmed so close that wing tips brushed the top string. One feather landed on the generator’s warm cover and quivered in the vibration. Colored bulbs hovered above the stall and reflected on the calm water.
Translation
