Lila walked along the rocky tide pools after school.

Soft evening light fell across the water.

A smooth seashell rested on a flat stone nearby.

She wanted to lift it and see its hidden colours.

Her boot touched a loose pebble beside the stone.

The pebble rolled, and the stone tipped into the pool.

Water splashed over a resting starfish and woke a small crab.

The startled crab scuttled sideways and bumped a slow turtle.

The turtle slid forward, closing the gap to Lila's toes.

She stepped back quickly, lost balance, and sat in cool sand.

Wet clothes clung, but the seashell now floated beside her knee.

A gray dolphin surfaced beyond the rocks, blowing a short spray.

Its wave pushed the seashell nearer until she could grasp it.

A small octopus peeked from a crack, ink swirling then fading.

Lila rose, brushed sand away, and placed the shell in pocket.

Behind her, the turtle paused; water settled around the tilted stone.

She walked home with quiet steps.
