An hour later, tall grass still hid the clearing, and fallen branches had been tangled across the narrow track. Leo lifted the binoculars, scanning gaps between trunks, yet only a grey kangaroo bounded away, startled by their crunching boots. If they had followed the kangaroo, they would have missed the moment altogether. Instead, Maya knelt to inspect faint tracks pressed into damp soil, while Leo shifted left, searching for any break in the foliage.
