Salt mist hung above pale sand; distant waves murmured beneath an overcast sky. Leo had packed the binoculars the night before, and Maya had labelled each sketchbook page for field notes. Today their observable goal: confirm whether a quokka population still wandered near the old lighthouse clearing. They crossed a timber footbridge where boards gave a slight bounce under their steps, releasing dry echoes into the air. Shrubs brushed their sleeves, and sharp grass seeds clung to their socks. Although the reserve advertised rich wildlife, recent environmental reports mentioned only silence, so every rustle beside the path drew their attention.
An hour later, tall grass still hid the clearing, and fallen branches had been tangled across the narrow track. Leo lifted the binoculars, scanning gaps between trunks, yet only a grey kangaroo bounded away, startled by their crunching boots. If they had followed the kangaroo, they would have missed the moment altogether. Instead, Maya knelt to inspect faint tracks pressed into damp soil, while Leo shifted left, searching for any break in the foliage. Sudden wind whipped loose sand against their ankles, forcing both of them to pause and shield their faces. Grains rattled against the lens, and Leo wiped them away, blinking until the glass cleared.
When the gust settled, a tiny shape appeared beneath a low bramble, its rounded ears twitching like short antennae. The creature hopped forward once, revealing the unmistakable face of a quokka, then froze only two steps from Maya’s boot. Both observers remained absolutely still, and the bridge behind them stopped creaking; only distant water slapped against wooden pylons. Maya's knuckles whitened on the notebook, yet her arm stayed completely low. After a silent heartbeat, the quokka spun around and vanished under the bramble, leaving twitching leaves in its wake. Only a round paw print rested beside the quiet track.
