English Original
A broad plateau stretched beyond the last row of pines, its pale grass shining under late-morning sun. Warm air carried the dry scent of sage, while tiny insects ticked against an upturned metal cup. Leo unpacked a camping stove near a flat stone, and a shaggy dog circled the area, nose twitching at every unfamiliar smell. Far below the rim, a distant river produced a steady hush, barely rising over the breeze. He had already gathered sliced carrots, beans, and noodles; Maya placed a black wok on the burner, and light clanged against its curved sides.
The first flame flickered, then vanished when a sudden gust pushed through. Maya steadied the stove with a boot, yet the wok slid sideways, oil streaking toward the edge. She had wished she had packed a heavier pan, but no extra gear remained in the backpacks. They propped two stones as braces, reignited the burner, and this time the flame held. If the wind had stayed calm, the noodles would have browned quickly. A wooden spatula clacked while the vegetables began to sizzle, their colors brightening. Steam rose, and different smells seemed to blend in the warm air—sweet carrot, sharp bean, and toasted garlic.
Just as the noodles softened, the dog brushed against Leo’s knee. His balance shifted; the spatula struck the pan lip, and half the mixture leapt out in a sudden cascade. Bright pieces rattled over the stone and disappeared into short grass. Both siblings froze, eyes wide, while the dog chased a tumbling carrot. After a silent moment, Maya scooped the surviving food toward the center of the wok and tipped the pan away from the wind. The result looked uneven, yet the stove kept burning, and the scraped noodles hissed lightly. Steam drifted upward while the empty wok rested on the cool stone.
Translation
