Morning air pressed against the tiled courtyard as Leila dragged a rolled canvas toward the stall frame. A multitude of dry leaves drifted around her ankles, sliding in circles whenever the wind changed direction. The wooden poles she had set up the previous night still leaned against the table, their thin ropes dangling like sleepy snakes. She unrolled the canvas; colored triangles tumbled out, catching the light. The beams, ropes, and eyelets formed a collective effort that, when combined, could shelter a small section of the marketplace from the unruly breeze.
She lifted one corner and hooked it over a pole, yet the opposite side sagged, refusing quick negotiation with the frame. A sudden gust tugged hard; the unsecured fabric snapped upward, slapped her shoulder, and folded around her neck. Leila steadied her footing, then tried again. Two ropes pulled in opposite directions, as though they attempted to balance interests between canvas and wind. She looped each cord, but the knot slipped; the pole tipped. Its metal tip struck a patch of damp clay, leaving a lasting impact beside her boot—an oval dent where water welled slowly. Kneeling, she pressed the stake deeper, turned the rope twice, and felt the fabric tighten over her head.
Another whirlpool of air whistled through the square, flipping the canvas inside out. For a moment, sunlight poured onto an underside no one had seen for years: faded sketches of star patterns glimmered between seams, drawn by some earlier hand in silver ink. The improvised sky billowed above her, constellations bending and straightening as the wind pushed and paused. Leila paused only long enough for the fabric to settle, then climbed the bench and guided the final eyelet onto its hook. The frame groaned; the ropes clenched; fallen leaves rattled against the stall floor. With the last corner anchored, the painted stars hovered overhead, swaying gently as daylight filtered through thin dye.
The breeze kept roaming, yet the roof no longer fluttered; instead, soft shapes of light drifted across the tabletop while the canvas rested firmly on the frame.
Translation
