The hedge beside the old tram depot rustled as a small hedgehog pushed through. Dusk spread thin blue light across cracked concrete while cool air tasted of oil. Warm iron rails lay ahead, crossing the yard in crooked lines. The hedgehog began a slow search for loose paper strips. He had sniffed them earlier. Each rail edge pressed against his paws. A cold sensation climbed his legs whenever metal touched skin. Some rails have been covered with brown rust, yet their smooth tops stayed slippery. A broken headlight that hung like a dull moon reflected nothing. A faint breeze kept sweet leaf dust moving along the ground.

Halfway across, a peculiar tremor ran through the sleepers. Gravel shifted under claws. An empty carriage, long asleep, rolled a handspan forward. The slight slope revealed itself. Wheels clicked, stalling near a gap between tracks. The hedgehog froze, spines raised. He lowered his body and slipped into the shadow beside a wheel. The unexpected pause opened a new path. Gravel now built a ridge beside the stopped wheel, forming a narrow bridge. He stepped over the metal, nose twitching. He reached a shallow ditch where wind had trapped dry paper and leaves. The pile rustled softly while his paws pulled fibers inward. Light from a distant streetlamp pooled around the ditch. The yard held still, and quiet air settled over the resting rails.
