Early tide pulled back, leaving flat rocks exposed near the cove. A young seal lifted its sleek head from a patch of drying kelp and sniffed the salt air. Warm sun baked the stones, yet a deeper pool farther out still glittered. The seal aimed its body toward that cool refuge. Other wildlife shifted nearby; small crabs clicked over barnacles while gull wings flapped overhead. Fish had grown scarce among the shallows, so a single silver one that flickered inside the pool looked precious. The seal hauled forward, but each stone was slick with thin algae. Flippers slid sideways, belly bumped edges, and the creature paused, whiskers twitching water droplets.

A sudden wave rolled in, filled the channels the tide has carved, and pushed foam against the seal’s chest. The extra lift solved the slippery problem, so the animal glided over the stones instead of crawling. At that moment, a black-backed gull swooped, beak aimed at the precious fish. Splashing hard, the seal lunged first. Water burst upward; the fish shot away and vanished into deeper blue. While the gull circled and cried, the seal blinked twice; the wave had tossed a spiral shell onto its flipper. The fragile spiral shimmered pink and cream. Resilient seaweed still hugged the stone beside it, holding the shell steady until the seal could nudge it onto safer sand. Foam settled, and sunlight danced on the unexpected treasure.
