Warm sunlight laid stripes across the garden path, and damp earth smelled of mint. Near the gate, Ben balanced a wooden board, which he had painted yesterday in vibrant orange and blue. He and Mira wanted the new sign above the thriving herb bed. They have measured the post twice already, yet fresh paint still left the surface slick. When Mira lifted the board, her fingers slipped, and the sign tilted toward a nearby hive frame where pieces of broken honeycomb waited for collection.

A sudden rustle sent small stones rolling. A slender mongoose slipped from between the pots and eyed the dangling rope. Before either child reached it, the rope was tugged sideways; the board swung and bumped the post again. Mira steadied the edge with her elbow while Ben pressed a chunk of sticky honeycomb against the knot. The wax gripped like glue, and the rope finally held. The knot was tightened quickly, and the board settled level above the soil. The mongoose, satisfied with its brief game, trotted off through the vibrant leaves. Light clung to the fresh letters, and a single bee floated past the resting sign.
