Morning light fell across the small patio behind the house. Mara and Leo carried a wooden board that would serve as their work table. Warm air smelled of wet stone, and a bee circled the blooming geraniums beside the steps. They have prepared bright paint since early breakfast, hoping to decorate a new paper kite. A flock of sparrows looped above the fence, wings beating in short bursts. The old stool was taken from the shed, and jars of color rested on it. Laughter floated through the open kitchen window when their dog nudged a brush off the edge.

A sudden breeze rushed across the yard. Light cups tipped, and drops of red and blue scatter over the white kite. The paper lifted, danced, and settled again, leaving wild stripes like spring petals. Mara steadied the board while Leo chased rolling brushes that slid across smooth tiles. He placed two clay pots near the edges, adding weight. One pot, heavier than expected, balanced the kite at last. Sparrows landed and pecked at seeds loosened by the wind. Their quick hopping pressed tiny marks into the wet color. When the air grew quiet, the siblings stepped back. Bright patterns dried on the kite while birds studied their own footprints near the patio steps.
