Pale light from distant streetlamps slipped between dusty curtains over the high windows. Far off, a refrigerator motor hummed, and faint vanilla mixed with wax. Mason balanced a birthday cake on the folding table while Lila arranged thin candles in a circle. Around them, scattered tools and colored ribbons marked hours of silent teamwork. A small instruction sheet had been taped beside the main switch, yet none of them could read it now. Earlier, they had been exchanging ideas through hurried sketches and hand signals, because the hall’s power had flickered off again. Their goal had sounded simple: make the room bright at the exact moment their friend Kira walked in. Now the clock pressed forward, yet the only light came from Mason’s phone screen.
Matches lay forgotten in a damp paper sleeve near the sink that afternoon. Lila tried to light a spark, but the first stick crumbled instantly. She rubbed another; orange flared, hissed, then died as a sudden breath of air rushed from the ceiling vent. If the caretaker had closed that vent earlier, the flame would have survived, yet the metal louvers stayed open. Mason placed his palm carefully around the next match to guard it. The wick of the nearest candle finally caught and burned with a tiny blue core. Wax softened in slow waves, and the faint smell began to fill the air. Before they could celebrate, the vent above the cracked ceiling panels whirred again. The newborn flame bent sideways, touched the next candle, and—like a domino—set every taper alight. A second later, the vent’s gust snuffed half of them at once.
Mason tapped the table twice, a small wish for good luck engraved in that rhythmic sound. He leaned forward, ready to blow out the candles himself and relight them when Kira opened the door. The door handle clicked sooner than either of them expected that evening. Kira stepped inside, meeting a scene half glowing, half dark, smoke weaving above the table. A quick breath left her mouth and her eyes widened, freezing her shoulders for a breath-long pause. Mason’s cheeks ballooned, and all flames vanished in one rushed breath. Ash-gray threads drifted slowly upward; wax droplets cooled around the wicks in quiet rings. Somewhere outside, late traffic rolled past the windows, indifferent to the tiny drama. A single candle stood upright on the cake, its flame steady and small.
Translation
