Morning light fell across the bright kitchen tiles. A faint vanilla smell floated near the stove. Ella opened the tall cupboard slowly. She planned to serve strawberry preserve. Hospitality toward her friend Sam shaped today’s simple task. On the shelf rested a slim book about motivation. A photo from their friendship picnic leaned against a bowl. She moved it aside and touched the wide jar. Glass clicked softly against wood before she lifted it. Suddenly, the wooden shelf creaked under the shifting weight.

Plates slid forward and tapped the jar’s smooth side. A single plate wobbled toward the counter edge. The jar bumped the cooler that stored last year’s vaccine. The cooler skidded and struck the door. The door swung wider, knocking a spoon toward the floor. Metal rang loud, and Ella caught the spoon. She steadied the cooler, slid plates back. Juice from the jar dripped but stayed inside its lid. Ella wiped the shelf and placed everything on the table. Bread waited; she twisted the lid open.
