Mara stopped on the wide, sandy stretch beside the old pier. Pebble, her terrier, circled her boots, leaving quick prints that vanished with each mild wave. She had planned to sketch the twisted shape of a broken mast lying near the water, so she dropped her backpack onto a dry patch and pulled at the zipper. The metal teeth refused to move. She tried again, guiding the slider slowly, but the line held firm. A closer look showed pale grains shining between the teeth. The slider had been jammed by grit carried on the wind. Mara exhaled through her nose and knelt, determined to clear the track.
Using a corner of her T-shirt, she brushed the teeth, yet the grain stayed. Pebble lost interest and trotted toward a shallow rock pool. A quick splash followed, and cool droplets touched Mara's arm. She lifted the backpack, dipped the zipper into the pool, and worked the slider under water. Tiny bubbles escaped; finally, the line slid open with a faint click. She reached for her notebook, but Pebble's paws scraped stone again. Mara turned and saw a small lobster edging backward in the pool, antennae waving. Clinging to its shell, almost hidden by sunlight, a miniature seahorse swayed with the current.
The pairing looked strikingly unusual, like two mismatched ornaments left inside a glass cabinet. Mara crouched low; her knees pressed damp sand while her pencil moved in short, urgent lines. Each time she shifted, Pebble shuffled beside her, nose high, yet he kept a respectful distance from the lobster's claws. The tide crept forward, and fresh water rolled over her drawing pad. She paused, let the sheet drip, then continued. Moments later the seahorse loosened its curled tail, drifted free, and the startled lobster darted under a stone ledge. Mara closed the notebook and pulled the zipper again; the slider glided smoothly. Sunlight rested on the quiet tide pool.
Translation
