Salt crystals had whitened the upper shelf during the previous hour of sun. A flat mineral tang drifted upward, mixing with the iodine edge of soaked kelp, and a chalky flavour rode the breeze onto Zeke’s tongue as he crouched. Earlier he and Faye had finished a slow stroll along the cliff path and now knelt beside a mid-shelf basin. The elderly teacher stood farther back, measuring barnacle clusters in silent concentration. Inside the basin, water carried a cool metallic scent, and a crab the colour of marigold tapped a limp shell. Zeke wanted the exact shade for his sketch. He lifted one hand with deliberate tenderness, hoping to block surface glare without letting his shadow interact with the skittish creature below.

The glare faded, letting the warm orange tone shine, and his pencil moved in short, pepper-fine strokes. A moment later the crab froze; only a sulphur hint rose where it had stirred sand. The stillness robbed the drawing of life. Faye’s elbow grazed Zeke, and she raised a pocket mirror, intending to send sunlight from the side. The angled beam brightened the shell; without the heavy shadow the animal began to interact with tiny pebbles again, sliding one aside with a click. Yet the sudden sparkle startled a periwinkle nearby, and its scramble clouded the pool with a muddy broth that smelled like damp paper. If the glare returned, they would tilt the mirror again, but for now outlines on the page softened.

Zeke steadied the mirror against a barnacle ridge and lowered its angle until a narrow ribbon of light touched the marigold shell. The water cleared slowly; an earthy seaside musk replaced the earlier mud. Faye darkened two blurred lines with firm strokes, leaving the legs less sharp than the carapace, yet recognisable. Neither child chased perfect detail; balance settled through small, practical movements. They eased backward, leaving mirror and basin to their own rhythm. Spray hissed against the lower ledge, and a raw salt fog drifted over the rock while the pool’s surface kept trembling in bright rings.

過去一個小時的陽光把上層岩棚曬得結出白鹽晶。礦物味混著海帶的碘味向上飄，風裡還帶著粉筆般的鹹味，蹲下的齊克嘴邊都能嘗到。稍早他和菲伊已經沿懸崖小徑散步完，現在跪在中層的潮池旁。稍遠處，年長的老師默默記錄藤壺數量。池裡的水透著涼涼的金屬味，一隻萬壽菊色的小螃蟹敲著空殼。齊克想把這顏色精準畫下，他舉起手，小心翼翼地擋住水面反光，又避免自己的影子干擾那隻容易受驚的生物。

反光消退，溫暖的橘色浮現，鉛筆在紙上快速點畫。不久螃蟹停住，只剩被翻動的砂粒帶出一絲硫磺味，畫面少了動感。菲伊的手肘碰到齊克，她舉起小鏡子，想從側面引來陽光。斜射的光亮起蟹殼，沒有厚重暗影後，螃蟹又開始推動細小卵石，發出咔嗒聲。然而亮光驚動了一旁的玉黍貝，牠翻攪出混濁、帶著潮濕紙張氣味的水。如果反光再回來，他們就再調鏡面，但此刻畫上的線條已微微柔化。

齊克把鏡子靠在藤壺脊上，慢慢調低角度，只讓窄窄的光帶照到萬壽菊色的殼。水面漸漸恢復清澈，早先的混泥味被海邊泛著泥土調的腥味取代。菲伊補深兩條模糊的線，雖然蟹腿不如甲殼銳利，但仍可辨認。兩個孩子不再追求完美細節，小而實際的動作讓畫面取得平衡。他們退後一步，留下鏡子與潮池自行運作。浪花在下層岩檯噴濺，帶著生鹽霧的氣息飄過岩面，池水的亮圈仍持續顫動。
