A pale chalk footprint broke the even dust on the museum workshop floor. Leah halted over the mark, and Mateo’s tool case brushed her elbow as he stopped as well, both following the white outline toward a covered stand near the rear wall.
Warm air drifted through the high windows, carrying the smell of drying varnish and the faint spice of wood polish. Light from an iron skylight struck rows of glass tiles, making brief splendor on bronze hinges and unfinished picture frames. Leah traced the line of footprints until cloth touched her knuckles. The stand looked ordinary, yet its linen drape sagged unevenly on one side. She tugged; the fabric slipped only a handspan before catching on a hidden nail. Mateo steadied the frame, but the nail held firm, and the cloth refused to move farther. His shoulders rose once, then he shifted grip and eased the cloth higher; the nail scraped loose grain from the post, though the covering still bunched around it.
Leah had already hoped to place whatever stood beneath the cloth into the afternoon exhibition, so she searched for another path. She wedged a thin palette knife between post and nail, yet the blade bent against dense oak. Mateo unbuckled a loop of wire from his case, threaded it behind the cloth, and together they lifted again. Wood creaked, and the linen finally slid free, revealing a shallow clay basin marked with the same chalky footprints. The trace no longer suggested an intruder; it simply showed where wet clay had pressed the floor when the basin was rotated. Inside the rim, small squares of colored glass waited like an unfinished mosaic, their arrangement echoing a quiet renaissance pattern the resident artisan often studied. The pair exchanged a brief nod, then Leah pressed a fresh thumbprint into the damp clay tile.
Translation
