They studied the single print; no second mark trailed away, and the pooled darkness beneath benches hid further clues. Ivy and Kent lingered until the glare eased, then slipped inside, hugging the dim edge where exhibit lights faded.

Beyond the first display hall, light thinned further. Spotlights floated like pale islands, leaving broad pools of darkness between cabinets. A low platform showed vintage gym equipment for a twentieth-century workout demonstration; metal bars caught scattered gleam, while the floor around them lay dull and undisturbed. Ivy bent, comparing boot sole to the dusty print still smudged on her fingertip, yet nothing matched. Kent crouched near a vent where a thin shaft of glow edged the tiles, searching for any repeated trace. Their slow circuit around pillars changed nothing; every reflective surface simply threw their own shadows back at them.

She decided to trace the single mark before leaving. At the bend into the science wing, a spherical sculpture rested on a tilted stand, half swallowed by shadow, the other lit by a beam. The curved base pressed light dirt onto the tiles. Ivy tried rotating the stand, but stiff wheels refused to move. If those wheels moved, the stand would roll. Kent shifted to the far side and pushed; the frame rocked yet stayed. He had been studying the console beside the piece, its interface pulsing with standby light, and suggested lifting instead. Together they raised the metal ball, arms shaking until the weight balanced. Dusty ridges on its underside formed heel-like ovals identical to the footprint. Kent eased the ball onto its cradle, and a muted hum lingered.
