English Original
Tim, the young apprentice, hurried into the back room of the artisan pottery studio. His goal was simple: copy the spiral pattern on a tall clay jug before the wheel turned again. A sharp beam from the skylight struck the jug at one angle while an unpredictable draft from the half-open door blew loose grit across the table. Warm light passed over the rough brick floor, and the earthy smell of damp clay mixed with faint smoke from the kiln.
Sun and wind hit him together. The glare bounced off the pale surface, forcing him to squint, and the swirling grit peppered the fresh sheet that lay beside his pencil. Years of teaching were visible in the jug’s steady form, but none of that care helped his eyes or his page. Tim brushed the sheet clean once, then spotted a length of stained canvas that protected finished bowls nearby. He lifted the fabric and draped it over a wooden frame to block the glare. With the light softened, he pressed his free arm against the paper to hold it flat and hurried to trace the first curve.
The wind still tugged at the sheet, and tiny grains raced under the canvas edge. The fabric, already brittle where old glaze had dried on it, began to pull apart; small tears opened and spots of hard sunlight slid across the sketch in moving ovals. He kept drawing until one larger rip sagged downward, sending the frame sideways. A few shaky lines covered one corner of the sheet. Dust drifted across the half-drawn page.
Translation
