Seth slid a shallow tin tray under the skylight and pressed an ice cube onto its dull surface. A striped cat crouched on the worktable corner, whiskers twitching at the faint crackle of frost. Sunlight warmed the thin metal from above. Resin scent mixed with pale dust motes under the rafters. A faint hiss rose as the cube started to melt and glide. The first drip raced along a shallow groove, then slipped off the edge and tapped the dusty floor. The cat followed the drop with wide eyes while a tiny ribbon of steam hovered above the warm tray. Seth took one silent step back. He watched which would reach a destination first, the growing puddle or the wandering vapor. The water touched a pile of dry sawdust, darkening the outer grains. A strip of bark from distant wilderness lay beside the tray, and drops darkened its rough ridges.
A quick burst of curiosity prodded him to explore another path. He lifted a second cube from a bowl and placed it on a copper plate nearby. The plate still carried warmth from a kettle that rested there earlier, so melting began faster. Runoff met the first puddle and together they rushed toward the dark sawdust ring. Water soaked the ring, then spread under the cat’s paws. The cat hopped to a shelf and scattered wood shavings onto the wet tin. The new flakes floated, cooled, and formed a thin crust that blocked another stream. Seth discovered a fork opening beside the crust, carving fresh lines across the tray. Steam touched the colder windowpane and turned to mist. Small beads rolled down and dripped onto a coil of copper wire. The wire twitched as heat left it, and a crystal thermometer swung gently. Each tap from the swinging thermometer sent fresh ripples across every shallow pool. Seth wiped his palms on his apron and let the maze spread without guidance. He turned toward the open doorway where afternoon light warmed a line of clay pots. A blackbird outside fluttered onto one pot and sent a thin cloud of dust upward.
Translation
