Shortly before noon, Mira reached a small hilltop lawn with her spotted dog, Pippin, and a bright blanket meant for a picnic. Cool air brushed her cheeks while damp grass cooled her knees. She has packed sandwiches that have stayed dry inside a metal box. When she shook the blanket open, a steady breeze pushed one edge upward, and rainwater that still flowed down the slope soaked the fabric from below. Two forces—wind above and water below—pulled the cloth in opposite directions, leaving the center twisted.

Mira pressed two flat stones on the corners, yet the stones were swallowed by the soft ground and the wind lifted the edges again. While thinking, she noticed Pippin’s travel bowl, which had collected clear rainwater. An idea arrived: the same water that pulled the blanket down could weigh it. She folded small pockets along each corner, poured the bowl’s rainwater inside, and the extra weight pinned the cloth; the breeze flattened against it instead of lifting. The trick worked, but the water moved toward the center and formed a shallow pool. A rubber narwhal, once tied to the basket as decoration, drifted across the new pond, and one wrapped sandwich slid after it like a slow boat. Later, Pippin stepped onto the sagging middle, splashing water over the plates and sending the narwhal toy rolling into the grass.

Mira let the damp blanket slump in place and jogged toward the toy. She stopped beside a dragonfly that hovered above a shining puddle and watched its wings tremble against the light.
