Warm air rolled through the kitchen as Mateo slid a loaf from the oven. He laid the hot baking sheet across the stove grates, steam twisting above the metal. Iris opened the cupboard, searching for plates, while her elbow brushed a loose knob on the sink. The knob wobbled but stayed in place, so neither of them paused. The loose knob has bothered no one until now. A faint metallic tick echoed from the cooling oven walls. Outside the window, rain tapped the glass and carried the smell of wet leaves inside. Flour dust hung above the counter in a pale haze.

Mateo shifted the baking sheet again, and its rim clipped the shaky knob at a sharper angle. The valve jumped open; water shot sideways, splashing over the counter and racing toward the floor. The stream struck a garbage bag that leaned against the cabinet, pushing it across the tiles. The sliding bag was pressed against the recycling bin, tipping the light plastic container on its side. Bottles clattered out and skated through the spreading pool, nudging Iris’s shoes and forcing her back. One bottle rolled farther, ringing against the oven door and bouncing back into the water. She raised the overturned bin like a shield, then planted it beneath the faucet to catch the spray. Meanwhile, Mateo steadied his grip, twisted the trembling knob, and the flow narrowed to thin drips. The drips fell slower until silence replaced the rush. A dull reflection wavered across the puddle and stayed inside the quiet room.

馬特奧再次挪動烤盤，邊緣更用力撞到搖晃的旋鈕。閥門彈開，水流橫衝，濺過料理台奔向地板。水柱擊中靠著櫥櫃的垃圾袋，把它推過瓷磚。滑動的袋子被壓到回收桶上，將輕塑料桶掀到一邊。瓶子滾出，沿著擴大的水池滑行，頂到艾瑞絲的鞋尖，逼得她向後退。有一只瓶子滾得更遠，撞到烤箱門又彈回水裡。她把倒翻的回收桶當盾舉起，再塞到水龍頭下接住水花。與此同時，馬特奧穩住手，扭緊顫抖的旋鈕，水流縮成細小滴粒。滴水速度逐漸放慢，嘩啦聲被寂靜取代。水窪上晃動的暗淡倒影留在靜靜的房間中央。
