A sweet smell of boiling plum and vinegar hung under the low kitchen beams. Mabel stood by the stove, stirring the deep red syrup that climbed the wooden spoon in slow ribbons.

Beside her, Emil unfolded a small linen pouch that held ground ginger and tipped a pinch into the pot. Thick bubbles rolled, showing the syrup’s growing weight. A vintage glass funnel, clouded by age, waited on the counter together with jars whose mouths were narrow and jagged around the rims. A thin booklet lay nearby; its instruction pages curled where steam had soaked them earlier. Through the half-open window, warm air brushed their hair, and a faraway rumble promised rain.

They began filling jars. The syrup oozed through the funnel, yet its heavy flow stalled each time a seed blocked the neck. Emil braced the funnel with one hand while Mabel lifted the pot higher. Outside, the promised rumble exploded into a cloudburst. Wind pushed rain through the gap, and cool drops spattered the funnel’s rim, thinning the syrup before it reached the glass. Mabel angled her wrist, guarding the stream; Emil wiped stray liquid that spread across the tiles. One drip from the ceiling followed a jagged crack in the plaster and landed inside a half-filled jar. Without speaking, Mabel pinched the jar away and slid a fresh one forward. She then threaded a strip of clean cloth through the window latch, pulling it tighter so the pane leaned inward and diverted most of the spray.

For a moment they paused. Morning light glimmered on the wet tiles, revealing tiny grains of sugar that had escaped the pot. They returned to work, and the final jar accepted the thick red syrup without interruption. Rainwater drummed against the loose glass and splashed across the stacked plates. More drops streamed along the metal frame and kept racing toward the floor.
