Story Content

English Original

Morning light angled through the front window of the small bookstore. Lara carried a new ceramic bookend shaped like a moon and wanted to slip it beneath a row of hardcovers near the door. A quiet fan overhead spun warm air, and she paused to savor the fresh-ink scent rising from opened boxes on the floor. The majority of the hardcovers already leaned toward the aisle, holding one another in shaky solidarity, so she crouched and pushed. The weight resisted; pages slid yet the stack refused to move.

She tried again, bracing both palms against the glossy covers. The fan’s breeze lifted loose dust, but it offered no help. Lara straightened, noticing that the top book—the only one with a wide dust jacket—flapped each time the fan turned. An idea formed in the small pause after the blades passed overhead. She eased that book halfway out, angling its jacket like a sail. The next sweep of air struck the jacket and nudged the leaning column just enough for a narrow gap to appear near the base.

Quickly, she guided the moon-shaped bookend into the gap, letting the stack slide back against its cool curve. The redirected breeze solved one force, yet it caused another surprise: a pile of receipt paper, now unstopped, caught the moving air and spun across the tiled floor like pale ribbons. Lara watched them swirl past her shoes. The fan kept turning more softly, and the loose papers drifted down until each sheet lay flat again.

Translation
