The Drum That Rolled Loose-

English Original
A metallic whir rolled from a tired ceiling fan above the narrow storeroom. Owen and Vera stood beside a tall ceramic drum perched on a small wheeled turntable. The vendor who delivered it last week left no tool for the stiff lid. They hoped to open it and move the contents before the next delivery arrived. A slight slope ran from the shelves toward the loading door. The turntable drifted each time they touched it. Cool air from the corridor mixed with warmer air inside, carrying the dry smell of cardboard. Owen braced his boots and twisted the lid with both hands. The drum spun instead, rolling back a finger's width and erasing the effort.
Vera pressed her palm on the warm metal and paused to breathe. A faint trace of oil glistened under the rim. The slippery ring meant the lid wanted to spin, not lift. She tapped the turntable, watching the wheels whirl freely down the slope. An idea flickered across her face, and she slid a wooden wedge between two spokes of the lid. Then she let go of the drum so gravity could turn the base against the blocked lid. The barrel pivoted, wheels squealing, and the lid cracked loose with a dusty cough. Freed at last, the heavy vessel kept rolling, gathered speed, and struck a stack of small gear boxes. Cardboard split; brass cogs spilled out and spiralled across the dim aisle. Owen hopped aside while loose wheels continued to twirl. Dust rose and drifted toward the bulb overhead. Motes spun in the warm light, turning slowly long after the footsteps faded down the corridor.
Translation
