Jonah and Mia stood on the narrow sand causeway that joined Shell Island to their uncle’s white yacht. They planned to haul a box of fresh fruit across before the causeway vanished under the evening tide. Water already lapped over Jonah’s toes, showing the advancing deadline. A low hum from the lagoon marked distant surf against the coral reef, while warm air carried a faint salt taste and late light painted the wet sand bronze. Ahead, a fallen bamboo pole blocked the straight path, and the tide pushed small ripples around it. Jonah pointed toward two options: the slippery row of flat stones closer to the reef, or the longer curve of firmer sand that turned inland. The stones looked faster; the sand bend looked safer but slow.

Mia lifted the box and chose the stones, trusting her creative balance from ballet class. Jonah followed, keeping one hand under the box. Halfway across, a stone tilted. His sleeve tore on a shell edge, and the box dipped, splashing fruit into the rising water. While he scrambled, a young whale surfaced just beyond the reef, its grey back rolling like a gentle hill. The surprise pause let Mia grab the floating mangoes. By then, the tide covered most of the causeway, marking another advance. They hurried onto the yacht’s ladder, clothes dripping and pockets full of sand. The cost showed in Jonah’s frayed sleeve and in two bruised knees, yet the box now sat safely on the deck. Foam swirled around their ankles. The box remained upright beside the mast.
