A loose chain clinked against the wagon side, echoing across the flat field. Blake and Dina paused beside the empty crates; the farm’s old scarecrow squeaked as wind turned its wooden arm. Sunset already brushed the western fence with orange bands, and their goal stood clear: carry one more basket of apples to the porch before light disappeared. A heap of hay bales blocked the direct strip between trees and barn. Warm air carried bits of straw that drifted around their boots, and the soft rustle mingled with distant crows.

The glowing stripe along the ground shortened while they searched for a gap; darker orange now covered the scarecrow’s chest. Two routes remained. A narrow lane around the heap looked calm but long. The other way climbed straight over the stack—quicker, yet pieces of broken twine poked out like nails. They traded a wordless nod, braced knees, and started upward. Straw scratched Blake’s arm, and Dina’s sleeve tore on a hidden splinter, but halfway up she noticed a tiny woven pouch lodged between bales. Inside lay three smooth seeds, larger than any apple pip they knew, perhaps saved from a forgotten harvest. They slipped the pouch into Blake’s pocket, swung down the far side, and reached the basket in dimmer light. A final glance showed only the scarecrow’s hat still glowing. Dina tipped the apples into the nearest crate. Blake pushed the heavy lid across the top.
