Dorian balanced a clear plastic stencil of a distant glacier between two dowels, then tightened a clamp to hold it upright. Their plan was simple: trace the icy outline onto a pale board. Yet the late afternoon glare bounced from the glossy surface, while the prism threw sharper colors across the ruler’s pencil marks, leaving the lines hard to see. A narrow ray continued its journey across a coiled measuring tape before slipping under a pot of glue. Cool varnish smell mingled with the faint creak of a swinging shutter at the high window.

Sara pivoted the board, and Dorian angled the desk lamp, hoping to ease the competing lights. Instead, the lamp’s reflection flashed straight into their eyes, while the sun carved a darker silhouette of Dorian’s hand over the stencil. The colors surprised both helpers; Sara laughed and lowered the lamp a notch, keeping the new beam steady. Dorian traced one bright contour, then let the pencil drop when the rainbow began to fade.
