English Original
Sara slid a thin cedar panel across the low table, then traced shallow grooves with a blunt chisel. The table has held scratches from many projects. Each stroke raised a neat relief ready to hold a small metal strip. From the corner, a drip struck a dented tin bowl and sent a ping around the workshop. The dented tin bowl had lost its shine long ago. The old skylight rattled in sympathy, and the faint hum of a ceiling fan folded into the echo. A folded couch with cracked vinyl, once used by a therapist, leaned beside a shelf of paint jars. Dust lay thick on its legs, showing how long it had waited in that exact spot.
She tapped the panel to test its tone. The cedar gave a soft, woody ring that vibrated through the table. The pulse met the drip at the bowl, and the thin metal trembled. The bowl skidded, tipped, and water spilled across the smooth concrete, spreading into a dark puddle. The moving sheet of water nudged a wooden toy carved like a flounder, abandoned under the shelf. The fish slid forward, bumped the therapist’s couch, and set its hollow frame shaking with a dull thrum. That tremor climbed the shelf and reached a tall glass of lemonade balancing near the edge. Ice cubes rattled, a lemon slice spun, and liquid splashed onto the panel Sara held in one hand.
Cold drops dotted the fresh carving. Sara paused, wiped her cheek with her wrist, and rolled her shoulders without lifting the tool again. A faint creak came from the rafters, answering the floor’s new pattern. She laid the panel on a stool and knelt to watch the puddle keep crawling toward the door. Tiny bubbles popped around the wooden flounder while the glass above released another quick ring.
Translation
