Grit from the sandpaper scratched against June's fingertips as she smoothed a cardboard cone. She planned to shape the cone into a model volcano for the school recycling program. Glue already shone along its paper seams. A low electronic hum rolled from a small speaker beside a glass vase. The setup belonged to Grey's unfinished sound experiment. The vase vibrated like a quiet bell, and rings flickered across its surface. June tapped a ruler against the cone, measuring the rim before adding a wooden dowel inside for strength. Every tap sent a faint echo through the workbench. Paintbrushes lay nearby, waiting for red and orange paint, while loose wood shavings collected near the clamps. Outside the hum, the workshop kept its usual creaks. The speaker deepened each noise into a slow, hollow drone.
A sudden shift in pitch traveled through the bench. Bolts in a corner rattled, and the vase edged forward. June lifted the volcano, but the vibration crossed the table faster than her hands. The vase slid again, touched the cone, and both objects wobbled. Glue dribbled onto the speaker grille, changing the sound into a wet gurgle. She grabbed the nearest cloth tool pouch and wrapped it around the vase base, dulling the resonance. Next, she placed a cork pad beneath the volcano, then returned the dowel with gentler taps. The hum survived, though softer, and Grey's experiment continued beneath the fabric. Red paint finally ringed the crater, while the vase glowed faintly with captured tremors. The muffled hum moved along the shelves. A thin wood shaving quivered on the floorboards.
