The metal garden lamp above the gate flickered twice, throwing pale circles on the gravel pathway. Hugo, a visiting biologist, guided a wheelbarrow while Lily walked beside him with a trowel in her belt. They aimed to lower an immense clay pot into a fresh pit near the trellis. A watering can swayed inside the wheelbarrow, clinking each time the wheel bumped. A faint smell of wet mulch mixed with the cool touch of evening air along their sleeves. A curious robin hopped across the fence, watching numerous crickets scatter over the soil. Hugo had studied bird calls for years already. He only nodded at the robin and tightened his grip. The slope ahead dropped gently, yet loose stones waited to shift under the wheel. They braced their boots and started down slowly.
The wheelbarrow gained speed, and the single tire skidded sideways. Lily pinched the handle end and pulled outward to slow the rush. But the rim hit a coiled hose that lay forgotten across the path. The jolt threw the clay pot forward; soil slid, and a bright green sprout cracked the surface. Hugo twisted his torso and hooked one elbow over the rim, absorbing the momentum. Their combined weight slowed the barrow enough for the tire to bite into firmer ground. Once motion eased, they propped the pot against a wooden stake beside the raised bed. Lily brushed loose soil back into place carefully. The lone sprout stood upright, shaking tiny droplets from its tip. Wind shifted the vine on the trellis, and dry leaves rattled briefly. The lamp’s glow steadied across the gravel, while small pebbles stopped rolling near the hose.
Translation
