The sharp smell of crushed apples from last week's harvest mixed with cool dust inside the narrow cellar. Noel lifted a glass jar; its lid showed painted flowers and a tiny mountain pressed into the glass. He wanted the dried petals hidden under the wax circle, yet the metal band refused to move. The stone floor breathed chill upward, and frost crystals dotted the rim. Meanwhile, faint warmth drifted through a vent that linked the cellar to the kitchen above. Each puff left a sheen of moisture on nearby shelves. Two conflicting temperatures pressed against the jar, and the metal tightened even more when Noel twisted it. A tremendous clang rang out as he struck the lid against the wooden bench, but nothing shifted.

Lena climbed down the stairs, her breath forming faint clouds in the colder air. She tried to grip the slick band; their fingers slipped, and the jar squeaked but stayed closed. While wiping her palms, she discovered the warm vent directly above an iron hook. An idea brightened her eyes. She propped the jar on the hook so the neck almost touched the drifting steam. Soon beads of water ran over the lid, and the metal warmed. The cold floor kept the glass body rigid, yet expanding heat loosened the band. With one firm twist, both of them felt a tiny crack as the seal broke. Hot drops fell onto a stack of paper bags below, curling their edges into soft waves. Two damp palm prints stayed on the loosened lid; steam spiraled past them toward the dark stairwell.

莉娜走下階梯，呼出的白霧在更冷的空氣裡飄散。她也試著抓住濕滑的金屬環；兩人的手指滑過，罐子吱一聲卻依舊關著。擦手時，她發現暖風口正好在天花板一個鐵鉤上方。她眼睛一亮，將罐子掛在鉤上，讓瓶頸幾乎貼住飄動的蒸氣。不久水珠沿蓋流下，金屬漸漸變暖。冰冷地面仍固定住玻璃身體，但膨脹的熱度鬆開了金屬環。兩人合力再扭，微微一裂，封蠟破開。熱水滴落到下面一疊紙袋，邊緣捲成柔軟波紋。鬆開的罐蓋上留著兩個濕掌印，蒸汽繞著它們向黑暗的樓梯口盤旋。
