A dull twang shook the cellar whenever the loose bungee cord rebounded against an iron hook. Mae and Zane stood beside a low table. They ladled warm vanilla syrup into narrow glass bottles that caught what little lantern light reached them. Cool air slid along the stone floor. Faint echoes drifted up the stairwell from the farm above the valley. Mae let her gaze wander across stacked crates while the cord bounced again. Its green strands stretched and relaxed like a quiet drum. Her uncle stored winter supplies here, so spare cloth, tins, and wire already crowded every shelf. The routine stayed simple: fill, wipe, and cap each bottle before the syrup cooled too thick.
A sudden draft burst through a cracked vent, carrying scattered snowflakes that swirled toward the syrup. The cold rushed over the table and set the hanging cord swinging wider; each rebound sounded sharper. Mae grabbed a folded canvas grain sack from a nearby heap. Together, they pulled the cloth wide, hooking its corners to the quivering bungee. The sack stretched tight, its weave creaking under compression while edges flexed against the nails. Behind this improvised shield they kept filling bottles.
Meltwater soon darkened the middle of the canvas. Weight made the fabric sag, and the cord hummed under fresh strain. A thin rip opened. A spray of snowflakes slipped through, knocking a half-filled bottle that bounced but stayed upright. They corked the last jar and climbed the stairs, leaving the stretched sack drooping in the vent. Snowflakes continued to drift through the widening tear, spinning across the stone floor. Another gust struck, the bungee twanged once more, and loose syrup labels fluttered under the restless air.
Translation
