A slow drip echoed between the brick walls, tapping every few seconds. Rafe, the teacher, lowered a battery lamp onto the uneven stone floor of the cellar while Iris, his youngest student, carried a square mirror under her arm. Their after-class project needed a clear beam of light for a simple color test linked to an old family recipe that she planned to display at the school fair. After a week of quiet practice upstairs, they expected this final step to be easy. Yet the narrow space offered only mixed shadows and sudden glare. Whenever the lamp faced forward, its beam bounced from a steel bucket and flooded their eyes with a harsh reflection. When they aimed it aside, the far corner drowned in darkness, hiding the row of tiny glass jars they hoped to examine.
Cool air brushed their cheeks and carried a faint smell of damp apples. Iris tilted the mirror first, twisting her wrist until the beam refracted across a dusty bottle, but the glare returned and painted a sharp silhouette of her arm on the wall. Rafe crouched and placed a dull brass tray beneath the lamp, hoping the metal would soften the brightness. The tray instead threw a blue tint across the jars, shifting every label into the same pale color. He slid the tray away and raised the lamp higher; the ceiling hooks caught its light and scattered thin threads of reflection down like silver rain. Iris then angled the mirror once more, this time catching only the scattered strands, not the core beam. The combination formed a gentle wash that filled the corner without blinding them. She reached the first jar and lifted it toward the blended glow. Its clear surface showed the deep green syrup exactly as the recipe described. Rafe slid the polished mirror into its cloth pouch. A distant drip kept counting the seconds deep in the room.
Translation
