English Original
A single sodium bulb buzzed above the cellar door, throwing orange glare across the narrow stairs. Joy stepped down with her camera bag while Tinker, the gray cellar cat, slipped ahead, his silhouette stretching against the brick wall. She wanted a clear picture of an old glass jug that caught faint stripes of light every evening. To help the lens, she placed a small LED lantern behind the jug; a kaleidoscope of colors curved inside the thick glass, complex greens mixing with sudden violet flashes. Damp air smelled of chalk and old apples, and cold dust clung to Joy’s knuckles. For a moment nothing moved except slow drips falling from a copper valve, each drop forming a bright bead before sliding into a shallow puddle.
While Joy adjusted the focus ring, the puddle widened and began to reflect the lantern’s beam onto a discarded mirror leaning against a cider barrel. The mirror stood only because a brittle wooden bond along its frame still held the joints together. Tinker brushed the frame with his tail, and the glass shifted; reflected light jumped, white and sharp. The sudden flash struck Joy’s eyes, and the viewfinder went white. She blinked, lost her balance, and the jug slipped from her hands. It met the sandy floor with a dull impact, rolled once, and stopped, amazingly unbroken. Sand now dusted the lens, and glare still danced between mirror and water, making the next shot difficult. Joy studied the changing angle, tracking the relationship among lantern, mirror, and jug, yet the perfect photograph stayed out of reach. The jug lay on its side, unbroken. Lantern light kept sliding across the wet floor.
Translation
