Warm seaweed blended with drying paint near the lighthouse door, giving the air a sharp, salty smell. Sage carried a tin scoop and a bucket of fine sand up the stone steps, part of his morning routine. He sifted the sand through a wire tray, letting clean grains pour into small glass jars. Chalk dust from the worn steps clung to his sleeves, but he kept filling each jar. A woven basket sat nearby, already packed for a quiet picnic once the work finished. Beyond the rail, the vastness of sea and sky met in a breathtaking turquoise band, with a low island lying on the horizon like a dark patch of cloth.

While Sage arranged a neat mound of sand beside the lamp room door, a sudden draft curved through the tower. Loose grains scattered across the floor, and the slender gull that often watched him hopped aside, beating its wings. The flying sand uncovered a smooth green marble hidden in the pile, surprising Sage enough to pause. He flicked the scoop sideways, guiding most of the sand back toward the bucket, then shifted his stance so his shoulder blocked the next gust. The work continued, only one small adjustment needed. He planned to unwind later, maybe roll the marble along the stone path for the gull to inspect. A stronger wave struck the rocks below, sending a fresh spray of salt through the open window. The gull tilted its head toward the horizon while sand still trickled from the wire tray onto the flagstones.
