"That metal pail still sits too far." The pail scraped across the damp decking and stopped beside Astrid’s knees. Astrid knelt beside a shallow wooden frame fixed near the pier rail, a sandbox visited by curious children. Early warmth from the rising sun touched her sleeves and colored the wet wood a gentle gold. Faint salt dust glittered on the water between the quietly bobbing hulls. Xavier tilted the pail and let pale sand pour in a steady ribbon. The grains tapped the wooden floor and began to mound inside the frame. Sand hugged each corner, and a small crater opened where the stream landed. When the flow slowed, Xavier flicked the rim, and the last grains settled.
They had repeated this filling every calm morning, yet today a new hiss rose beneath the planks. Astrid pressed a steady palm against the mound beside the frame. Granules shifted under her skin and slipped away through an unseen gap. She brushed aside the top layer and watched grains trickle downward, widening the crater little by little. A woven basket of smooth pebbles waited nearby for decoration that morning. The pebbles lay exposed because the sand around them kept sliding away. Xavier lowered the pail until its rim touched the box and emptied another scoop into the hollow. The fresh load still snuggled through the gap, leaving the center uneven again.
Astrid shifted her knees and poured once more, guiding the stream along the edges of the frame. Fine particles continued to sift away, though slower, and a light ribbon of dust coated her knuckles. A gull glided overhead, its wings flipping sawdust from the repair bench. The drifting flakes mixed with the leaking sand and vanished between the decking. Under their steady hands, the sandbox stayed uneven, yet they kept working in the same quiet rhythm. Loose sand keeps slipping through the narrow dock gap below the frame. The crater beneath the box slowly widens with every gentle trickle of grains.
Translation
