The corridor smelled of damp rope and old lamp oil as Wade climbed the spiral stairs toward the lamp room. Pink strips of sunrise pressed through the narrow windows, but a cold draft rose from below while a salty gust slid through a broken pane above, turning the stairwell into a whistling tunnel. A speckled gull watched from the sill, its wings lifting and lowering in quick rivalry with the wind. Today’s exploration had one small goal: collect the carved wooden unicorn that had rolled near the great lens during last night’s cleaning.
Halfway up, the double airflow pushed hard from opposite sides, and the unicorn kept rolling in circles on the metal floor. The dilemma grew; every step forward shoved dust upward in puffs while the sea wind fluttered Wade’s notebook pages across the rail. He reached for help already lying nearby—a faded canvas cover once used for the giant bellows pump. He folded the canvas and propped it against the lower doorway, blocking the climbing draft. The cloth billowed and then sagged as its threads loosened, but the interior air calmed enough for him to edge toward the lens. With one hand he hooked the spinning toy; the other hand pressed against the warm glass, steadying himself while the outside gust still rattled the frame. A long tear crept across the canvas, letting thin lines of air squeeze through and hiss around his boots.
He set the unicorn beside the railing, unsure if the tear would widen further. A sudden snap of wings pulled his gaze outward, where the gull dived toward a foam line on the water. Wade leaned over the sill to watch the bird skim the bright surface, and the half-torn canvas flapped behind him like a slow, tired flag.
Translation
