Beside the doorframe, a ginger cat paused; its whiskers twitched toward the unfamiliar object. Water pipes clicked somewhere above, then faded.

Kira stepped into the room with a wicker basket balanced against her hip. A diverse tangle of socks spilled over the edge, while a single pristine shirt, still folded, peeked from beneath them. She had visited after the elevator lights had dimmed, hoping the machine would be free. The disc caught her eye before any clothes moved. Turning it over, she found a faded but festive star painted in the center; imagination pictured it once sparkling on a party badge. The surface felt wooden rather than plastic, and the edges showed hand-cut grooves, as if an authentic toy maker had shaped it years earlier. The cat jumped onto the machine, nudging the disc toward the floor. Kira caught it just before it slipped away, and a new texture revealed itself: one side carried adhesive residue, the sort used for wall art instead of clothing. The surprise shifted her first guess; the supposed button had probably decorated a child’s door rather than a costume. A rinse cycle finally hummed to life, but the slow flow warned of another pause. Kira carried the small wooden circle to the balcony, intending to clean the sticky back later. She slipped it into her pocket, and a mild detergent aroma hovered.
