What the Rolling Barrel Started-

"The crate keeps wobbling again," Rosa muttered.
Oscar braced his boot against the blue-grey cobblestones and nudged the wooden box under the stall’s steel frame. They aimed to lift a frost-white banner that had been left sagging across the front racks after yesterday’s rain. A short rope dangled from the banner corner, just above Rosa’s reach, so the pair stacked empty crates for height. Every shove made the banner swing, casting a shifting lattice of silver shadows over jars of olives and cool glass bottles.
When Oscar climbed onto the top crate, his heel slipped across the damp plank. The sudden weight shift tipped the stack into the barrel of rice beside it, and the barrel rolled. The rolling barrel nudged a row of steel trays; each tray slid forward, striking the next like lazy dominoes. Beans stored for a tasting tumbled out, scattering with bright serendipity across the silver-washed pavement in tiny skipping arcs. One tray clanged against the frame post, halting the tumble; the tray bent slightly, absorbing the last shiver of movement. Rosa lunged forward and caught the dangling rope before the banner could flop onto the beans.
She looped the rope over a hook welded to the frame. The fabric finally hung straight, its striking blue plane gleaming against the morning light. If the rope were a finger longer, the setup could sway harmlessly without crates or balancing acts. Oscar stepped down, beans crunching under his boot, and grinned like a discoverer over a minor discovery. Rosa’s stance looked surprisingly brave beside the orderly line of tilted crates. At the far end of the lane, a stray cat padded from behind a stall, pupils round at the rolling beans. A single pale bean bounced along the gutter toward the drain.
