English Original
A shallow cardboard slot beside the grapes bin lay bare, its coil of green twist ties already carried somewhere else. Lily drummed the rim with two fingers, catching only a dull thud beneath the steady hiss from overhead pipes. She had planned to bag her grapes before the next spray, yet the missing ties blocked that simple rhythm. They had been taken by earlier shoppers, leaving only the empty imprint of their coils on the cardboard. If the mist burst again, grape skins would turn slippery and slide through the flimsy opening. Behind her, tomatoes bounced inside a separate sack already sealed and safe, its knot tapping lightly against the cart’s metal frame. She rocked the cart forward; the front wheel rasped on the tile like a small crab scratching a shell. A low freezer drone drifted over the produce corner, layering a lazy whale song serenade beneath sharper register beeps from the bakery, and that rumble fused with ceiling fans so the mixing tones formed a fragile peace treaty that muffled the loudest trolley rattles.
She nudged the tomato sack, unwound its twist tie, and the knot surrendered with a faint metallic scrape. One end of the wire, now free, became her tool; she flattened it and pushed it through the grape bag’s damp rim. Mist nozzles clicked again, letting a fresh cloud saturate the lettuce heads and spatter soft drops across Lily’s wrists. She twisted the wire tight, and the bag puffed, rescuing the rolling fruit just before they could spill. A muffled pop followed; freed from its seal, three tomatoes edged forward inside their loosened plastic, bumping one another like slow surf. The trolley wheel chimed against a floor seam, and the rolling tomatoes slapped the bag’s wall, showing the cost of her rescue. She split the thin wire in half by unwinding its paper coat, then gave each bag a shorter twist using brisk turns. Neither seal looked perfect; small gaps stayed, yet both sets of produce now sat above the cart frame without threatening escape.
She slipped the twin bags into the cart basket; the wheel squeaked but rolled, accepting the extra weight without new protest. Freezer units along the next aisle paused their cycle, and sudden quiet spread like deep ocean water after a distant wave. Into that calm, one long mechanical hum rose again, carrying a lone whale song under the fluorescent panels. A restocking cart rattled past the aisle mouth, its stacked crates swaying gently while plastic lids tapped together like erratic shells.
Translation
