Every morning since the first keel was laid, Cora walked the narrow scaffold between the silent hulls. Today, near the sloop’s unfinished bow, a thin smear the color of milk streaked across a plank where the workers’ boots never tread. She knelt, brushing her knuckles along the grain; the stripe felt cold, almost slick, unlike the usual dust of saw and salt. The yard around her stayed busy—ropes groaned, gulls barked—but the tiny mark drew her focus, as though a hinge in routine had loosened. Not once did she pause on that path before, yet now her knees touched the curled shavings between ribs of timber.

She fetched a rag, meaning to blot the stripe, and found the fabric refused to absorb it. Only after several passes did she notice the smear held a faint shimmer, the way plank varnish catches late-day light. If the plank were any drier, the mark would have vanished under the cloth, yet it clung, stubborn and pliant. Cora hesitated, palm hovering; the shipyard usually coughed up splinters, not puzzles. Behind her, the tide-driven wind grew brisk, pressing flecks of salt against her face. She narrowed her stare: the trace stretched farther than she first believed, disappearing under the bulk of a beam set to endure next week’s caulking.

Lifting the beam even a finger’s breadth would risk the alignment, yet a heat behind her ribs pricked harder than habit. Her shoulders tight, she slipped a chisel beneath the beam and levered gently; wood groaned, and the beam shifted just enough. A line of tiny shells slid into view, nested in the smear as if poured there. What she had taken for resin revealed itself as pressed sea foam, still damp, holding minute curved shapes like a pocket universe crushed flat against oak. It was the hairline gap beside the shells that caught her breath: water seeped through, darker than tar, proof that the rising dusk tide had already reached inside the slipway.

Hands trembling from cold more than the wind, Cora weighed her next move. The sloop could weather splashes, yet brine seeping overnight would spoil fresh joints. Only after the shells spilled onto her palm did she change course; she angled the beam back, wedged a block beneath, and wiped the planking with slow, deliberate strokes. Infinite grains of salt scratched the rag, each crackling under pressure. Stillness never lasts—water will return with every tide—but small acts might shelter the wood long enough. Her knuckles raw, she tucked the wet rag into her belt. She pressed one chalk-white shell into the earlier smear and stepped off the scaffold.
