Pearl dipped the tip of her brush into diluted ocher, the brine-scented breeze drying each stroke before water could bead. Knee-deep above the reef, she balanced a narrow board across her thighs, mapping plates of coral that nestle under a lattice of branching fingers. Twice her fingertips paused over a faint scratch on a once-smooth mound; twice she dismissed it and kept tracing. Warm salt, a whisper of sweet rot from drifting algae, and the clean sting of sun-baked calcium mingled around her mask. A handful of shell grit collected inside her left shoe, yet she ignored the rasp. If the midday glare were any harsher, the reef’s muted browns would flatten, and her sketch would lose the hidden vermilion that flashed when waves bent the light.
A metallic thud rang behind her—somewhere along the quayside a loose cart wheel had struck an iron cleat—and the sound split the moment like a pebble through glass. She straightened, water sheeting from her calves, and slogged toward shore. The air near the stone steps smelled different, carrying oil from engine ropes and rusted hooks. Beside a faded wooden platform—once arranged for open-air cognition games during summer fairs—two deckhands wrestled with a rope kinked around a crate. Pearl braced the crate while they levered the knot free; no command passed, only quick glances and grunts. Nowhere along the quayside did she spot the spare barrels that used to line the wall, their absence leaving a pale stripe on the soot-blackened bricks.
The rope untangled, she waded back toward her board. Afternoon light slanted lower, sliding long stripes over the water and turning the coral into irregular coins of amber. More marks greeted her: a chipped edge here, a powdered rim there, a fresh film of silt that had not settled earlier. The same scratch she had ignored now spread like a lifeline across the mound, thin yet unmistakable, tracing the years layer by layer. A damselfish hovered near the groove, then tucked itself beneath, spine quivering as though testing the new shelter. Pearl set her brush down, lifted the plate coral gently, and discovered another fracture branching beneath the first, finer than a thread yet echoing the same curve.
She hesitated, brush drying in her grasp, then laid the coral back exactly as she had found it. The sketch resumed, each line narrower, steadier, the reef’s slow ruin recorded without comment. By the time she stepped away, dusk smoke from distant cook fires mingled with salt over the shallows, and the scent followed her toward the shore.
Translation
