Cora braced a dripping wooden frame against her hip when a sparrow burst from the drying loft, wings scattering fine lint. Instead, it dove toward an open skylight and vanished, leaving one pale feather wobbling through the humid air. Droplets pattered onto the water below, each circle widening until it touched the vat’s rim.

Cora caught the feather between thumb and forefinger; its shaft felt slick with moisture, almost waxed. Her palms still wet, she laid it on a newly formed sheet, curious whether the pulp would grip the barbs or release them. Dean watched in silence, the slow churn of the vat marking time between them, yet he kept his eyes vigilant for stray knots that might bruise the mixture. It was the faint metallic thread near the feather that drew their eyes next, a hair-thin glint embedded in the pulp surface. Cora hesitated, the frame trembling in her hands; then she let the pulp drain while the foil fragment clung to the feather, the shapes fused like a comet.
