English Original
Every dawn Ruby crossed the wide tidal flat, scanning for unbroken sand dollars; yet this morning a single deep footprint lay where the retreating water usually glossed the mud. Not once did the flat offer such a clear impression. Brine and distant char drifted past her nose, an overture of smells announcing another low tide. Brown foam hugged the edges of copious kelp ribbons, and tiny bubbles popped like muted applause. Her knees damp, she leaned closer. The print’s walls held their shape, fine ridges sharp as if pressed moments ago. What she noticed first was the faint paw-pad dimples clustered inside the heel, half-hidden by glossy silt.
She reached for a twig, then pulled her hand back, wiping her fingers on her sleeve instead. If the tide were any quicker, the mark would vanish, yet touching it too soon might smear the detail she admired. A heartwarming glow spread across the flats as the sun cleared the low clouds, turning each droplet into copper. That glow, however, coaxed the surface water free; thin filaments trickled toward the depression. Borrowing a generous pinch of dry sand from a nearby rise, she sprinkled it along a tiny ridge. For a moment the stream curved away, then split the dam, seeping through like tea over cracked porcelain.
The diverted flow picked up speed and headed toward a cluster of shallow pools where glassy shrimp flickered. Ruby stiffened; clearing the print had set a new trouble racing toward creatures that relied on still water. She dug a shallow channel with the edge of her boot, steering the freshet back toward the open flat, but each scrape collapsed another slice of the footprint wall. The neat oval deformed, revealing beneath one side a buried shard of galvanized metal. She lifted the shard with two fingers; mud released a musty puff that smelled of sweet rot and iron. Tilting it into the light, she made out flanged edges—a hinge, not a paw. What she had treated as a track now resembled the pressed outline of this very hinge, its feline curves a trick of earlier shadow.
She no longer fought the shifting water; the print’s lesson felt complete. Wind carried resin from distant pines while faint salt spray prickled her lips. A passing gull wheeled overhead, its cry brief and sharp against the hush. Ruby knelt, pressed a page from her sketchbook over the distorted cavity, and rubbed charcoal across the damp surface. Grainy black spread beneath her palm, the rubbing capturing scratches and pits the eye had missed. Charcoal dust mixed with moisture, lifting the hinge’s pattern onto the paper just as the first returning ripple kissed her boots. Ruby folded the damp sketch page and slid it into her pocket.
Translation
