Pearl ducked beneath the low beam and stepped from the sunlit courtyard into the mill’s damp porch. Water beat a measured rhythm on the wheel, and soaked timber breathed out a sour, mossy tang. Flour mist hung in pale drifts, billowing each time a chain dragged another sack toward the grinder. Not once did she question her task; the chute required clearing before grain arrived at noon. Her palm grazed the doorframe, rough splinters confirming the age of a place she thought familiar. A shaft of light struck a brass cauldron on bricks; its rim sweated warmth beside the trough.
Jasper, pensive and dusted white, waited near the hopper, his thumb tracing circles on the damp rail. Pearl nodded; only then did she see the wheel’s majestic arc slowing against the late-spring torrent. A swollen branch jammed beneath, the vibration crawling upward through every board. She crouched to tug it free, yet bark caught on iron struts and held firm. Her sleeves dripping, she stood, rubbed her chin, and searched for a sturdier lever. What she noticed first was the hearth poker, its iron length still warm from stirring mash.
Poker in hand, she braced one knee against the railing and leaned over the churning water. Only after the tip scraped the branch did the wheel jolt, spraying cold droplets across her face. Behind her, the cauldron quivered, and tinted steam erupted, curling through rafters like startled birds. Heat met drifting flour, forming clumps that dropped on the sluice and slickened the plank under her boot. Her foot slid; shoulders shaking, she grabbed the overhead beam, and the poker skittered into foamy water below. The branch swung free, yet the wheel lurched, hurling bright beads of river water across them.
Steam thinned and showed damp flour plastered on the sluice, while the freed wheel spun with harsher rhythm. Jasper pressed a palm against the axle’s wobble, and Pearl retrieved the poker, edge freshly bent. Silence never arrived; water slammed the paddles, and her earlier certainty scattered like chaff above the stones. The task appeared complete; still, she left the boards uncleared, her gaze fixed on the cauldron’s trembling rim. Flour paste oozed toward the doorway, and each new drop hardened against the threshold she had crossed minutes earlier. She stepped back into the courtyard, wheel spray darkening her boots, while the low beam dripped behind her.
Translation
