Kit’s fingers slid the oak lever a fraction closer to the runner stone before his thoughts caught up with the motion. On the beam above the wheel, a square of quilted fabric hung like a quiet pennant, its corners trembling in the cool draft that slipped through the loading door. The wheel rotated with a steady chuff, and the first grain of the morning dropped between the stones in a gentle whisper that mingled with the damp chill rising from the millrace.
The rhythm settled, yet small clues piled up. Water splashed lower than yesterday, and a chill sneaked through the floorboards despite the growing warmth near the hopper. Flour sifted into a burlap sack, forming ridges that slumped under their own soft weight. A wisp of straw poked from the fabric on the beam, catching stray dust until it looked lightly frosted. Bram stepped inside, brushed flour from his sleeves, and stared upward. “Odd place for cloth,” he said, voice nearly lost under the wheel’s groan. Kit’s shoulder lifted in a brief shrug, but his eyes stayed on that drifting corner of color.
Minutes passed; the grain ran coarser, and the stones muttered. Accumulated hints tugged at Kit more than any single one, and he paused mid-stride, feeling the pursuit of smooth grinding slip. He dragged a short stool across the gritty floorboards, climbed, and tapped the cloth with the handle of the grain paddle. The square resisted, anchored by something hidden; another tap loosed it, and dried mud crumbled onto his sleeve. When he turned the fabric toward the narrow bar of sunlight, a shallow bowl appeared on its far side—the stitched cloth had been folded into a cradle, the inside lined with those wisps of straw. A swallow skirted the rafters, circled once, then vanished back through the open door.
Kit folded the makeshift cradle again and wedged it back into the shadowed notch, leaving the nest undisturbed. He stepped down, floorboards cold under thin soles, and returned to the lever. The handle waited where his hand had left it, but a new warmth radiated from the grain-fed stones below; when his palm closed around the lever, the wood carried that faint heat against his chilled skin.
Translation
