Glare bounced off the metal edge of the station clock and sliced across the platform tiles. Heath knelt near a low bench, lining up a tiny toy train on a sheet of white card. He wanted a bright stripe for his photo, so he angled a small mirror toward the cracked skylight above. Dust on the glass scattered the beam, splitting it into pale bands. A narrow shelf beside the waiting room, once a pocket library for travelers, held rows of sun-bleached paper; its window flashed as the beam crossed it. At the far end, Rosa stood next to a crate of herb seedlings from the town garden, arms wrapped around the box like an easy embrace while she listened for the midday service.
Clouds slid behind the sun and the beam sharpened. The mirror sent a clear bar onto Rosa’s plastic water bottle; the curved sides refracted the light into a sudden rainbow. Colors danced over her face, so she lifted the bottle higher, and the water now harbored a brighter flare that leapt back toward Heath. Startled, he swung the mirror aside; the flare struck the timetable screen, covering the departure line with dazzling glare. Passengers shuffled, trying to read. Heath lowered the mirror to the bench. Rosa set her crate beside him, its damp leaves shading the bottle. The rainbow draped itself across Heath’s white card, and leaf silhouettes floated inside the arc like a tiny, moving paradise. Both the mirror and the bottle stayed in place, holding that mixed pattern while the platform loudspeaker crackled for the arriving train.
Translation
