English Original
"Tap the water pipe," Vance whispered.
Bea lifted a thin stick and struck the metal gently. A steady hum ran along the pipe, slid under the platform boards, and reached a waiting trolley; its loose wheel began to vibrate, sending a fine ring into the glass bottles stacked above it. The bottles chimed in short, frequent beats, and the gardener trimming herbs near the gate paused when his metal watering can rattled against the tiles. The long iron awning encouraged each echo to travel back, so the sound returned to Bea and Vance with a softer, lower tone. Light glimmered through dusty roof panels, catching tiny motes that drifted above their heads while warmer air brushed their cheeks.
Bea tapped again, harder and higher. This time the first pipe note met the lingering bottle ring, and both tones blended into a wavering chord that pressed against the timetable board. The board quivered; a single thumbtack slipped free and pinged onto a tin bench, adding a sharp accent. Vance’s eyes widened, and he flicked a second stick against the bench edge. The new strike set off another chain: bench ribs buzzed, the vibration crawled into a row of painted barrels used for flowers, and dusty petals jumped inside the rims. Those hopping petals landed on the pipe, changing its surface and dulling the final echo. Routine station noises returned at last—distant coins clinking, muffled footsteps—yet a faint chord still hovered under the roof. The final train whistle rolled away beyond the square. A thin shimmer of sound clung to the awning, then slipped into silence.
Translation
