English Original

A metal vent cover thrummed against the flat roof. Mae and Oscar carried a tin tray toward the center platform. They planned to turn it into a mirror for the evening constellation. The tray slid sideways on the gentle slope each time they placed it down. They finally steadied the left edge of the tray. A plump seagull landed on the opposite corner, tilting the whole sheet off balance. Oscar tried to wedge a chalk eraser under one side. Gravity pulled the tin free and the eraser popped away. Two different pressures fought at once on the tray. The roof’s lean dragged it downhill, while the bird’s shifting mass twisted it sideways. Warm air shimmered above the gray roofing felt, turning distant chimneys pale and wavering. They needed the surface perfectly level to measure star positions. An old astronomer had used a similar trick on another roof.

Mae noticed the bird’s habit of hopping toward anything that shone. She pinched a spare strip of aluminum foil and folded it into a tiny curling ribbon. She then hooked the ribbon to the uphill rim of the tray. Sunlight flashed on the foil, and the bird shuffled toward the sparkle. Its movement turned the animal into a living counterweight against the roof’s tilt. The tray leveled, water inside it spread evenly, and daylight replaced the wavering streaks. Their careful effort led to an odd outcome. The foil drifted, and the mirror slowly rotated east, away from their planned spot. Two damp handprints remained pressed beside the bright foil. A gust lifted loose feathers, sending them darting above the rail.

Translation
